The regular season has begun, so the Fantasy Doctor will be making house calls regularly, answering readers' fantasy questions Wednesday through Saturday each week. Send your questions to the Doc at fantasydoctor@pfwmedia.com.
Hey Doc,
Got two real quick questions for you:
1. Need to choose two WRs for Week Five:
Dwayne Bowe vs. DAL
Brandon Marshall vs. NE
Roddy White at SF
Steve Smith (NYG) vs. OAK
2. Which two of these receivers would you rather have for the remainder of the season: Percy Harvin, Kevin Walter, Nate Burleson or Mike Sims-Walker?
Thanks!
— Jake
OK Jake, let's start with your wideout question for this week. Without a doubt, the Giants' Steve Smith is a must-start in all fantasy leagues right now. He has been incredible this season and leads the NFL in receptions (34), receiving yards (411) and TD catches (four). As long as QB Eli Manning is able to play through his foot injury, Smith has to be in your lineup.
The battle for your second starting spot is closer, but I'd give the benefit of the doubt to White and continue to start him. I know he hasn't been great thus far, but he's too talented to be held in check forever. Plus, I'm still not completely sold on Marshall, and Bowe is dealing with a lingering hamstring injury. It's only a matter of time before White breaks out.
As for which receivers to keep for the rest of the season, I like all your options but would lean toward Sims-Walker and Harvin. Sims-Walker looks like a fantasy stud in the making, with 19-278-3 the past three games. Harvin, meanwhile, also has been solid early on and should only keep improving as the season wears on. Walter and Burleson have lots of potential, too, so you really can't go wrong here.
Doc,
Need help for this week's bye for Drew Brees. I currently have Jake Delhomme on my roster, but available free agents are Brett Favre, David Garrard and Derek Anderson. All four look to have favorable matchups. Thanks.
— Gregg, Apex, N.C.
You have some nice options here, Gregg, but one really stands out to me, and that's Garrard.
Coming off a monster game in which he threw for 323 yards and three TDs, Garrard travels to Seattle to face a weak Seahawks secondary. With a budding star at his disposal in WR Mike Sims-Walker, he should be able to torch the Hawks with regularity in a game that has potential to be very high scoring. I like his outlook quite a but not only for this week but also for the rest of the season.
If you're not keen on Garrard or aren't able to get him, Favre is a fine fantasy play this week, as well. He has thrown for 572 yards and five scores in his last two outings, and he faces a Rams defense Sunday that already has allowed seven passing TDs. The only reason I prefer Garrard is because that game could be more of a shootout, whereas the Vikings may choose to mainly the run the ball in the second half if they build a sizable lead. Either way, though, you'll get a nice one-week fill-in.
