The regular season has begun, so the Fantasy Doctor will be making house calls regularly, answering readers' fantasy questions Wednesday through Saturday each week. Send your questions to the Doc at fantasydoctor@pfwmedia.com.
Dear Doctor:
You were right on about Steve Slaton. I was disappointed with him the first week, benched him in Week Two because I recognized the bad matchup and now have him ready to go for me in Week Three.
My question is: should I use Aaron Rodgers at St. Louis or Joe Flacco at home against Cleveland? My leaning is toward Flacco, but I hesitate to bench a stud here. St. Louis held Washington to only nine points, so I am afraid that Rodgers will not light them up on the road. I do not think that Cleveland will shut Flacco down, but if I knew the answer, I would be writing your column!
Thanks for your advice and great column.
— Harry
Thanks for the kind words, Harry. After Slaton's slow start, I fully expect him to pick up his play this week.
I can see why this decision is a tough one. Flacco has outplayed Rodgers in the early going, but Rodgers has proven he can be a fantasy stud. Plus, they both have enticing matchups. In the end, I think you have to stick with your No. 1 QB and start Rodgers.
Even though the Rams held Washington to nine points last week, their defense is still a shoddy one. In fact, they're giving up 258 passing yards per game, so throwing on them hasn't been all that difficult. And remember that Matt Hasselbeck tossed three TDs against St. Louis in Week One. I think last week was more of an anomaly than anything, as the Redskins' offense simply isn't that good. Rodgers should light them up on his way to his first big outing of 2009.
While Flacco could have success as well, I don't see him having to air it out much against the Browns, as the Ravens should be able to control this one on the ground. Unless Cleveland puts up more of a fight than I expect, Flacco's numbers should only be pedestrian this week.
Doc, I am searching for some advice. I need to make a decision about my RB and flex position, and I have these players on my roster to choose from: Maurice Jones-Drew, Kevin Smith, Felix Jones and Tim Hightower. I can play three of them. Whom should I leave on the bench?
— Mike
The fact that I like most of these guys' matchups makes this a tough call, Mike. But I think I know which way you should lean.
First off, Jones-Drew is a must-start against a Texans defense that's been the worst in the league against the run, allowing a whopping 215 yards per game. And even though Washington has a solid run defense, I'd stick with Smith in this one, as he touches the ball as much as any back and should find a way to finish with decent numbers.
The real challenge here is deciding between Jones and Hightower, as I think both could have big weeks. However, since Jones possesses the big-play ability that Hightower is lacking, I'd probably make Jones the third starter. With Marion Barber looking unlikely to go, the lightning-fast runner should get a nice workload against Carolina, which has had lots of trouble against the run early on. He's bound to rip off a couple long runs. Hightower isn't a bad play against Indy, either, but he just doesn't have the same upside.
I really could use your help this week. I am in a 12-team, standard league that starts three WRs and has a WR/TE flex position. Currently, Greg Jennings and Marques Colston occupy two of the WR roster spots. I need help filling the other two. I have Laveranues Coles, Mark Clayton, Laurent Robinson, Mike Sims-Walker and Josh Morgan. Which of these two would you start? Thanks.
— Brian, New Jersey
Well, Brian, let's start by narrowing down the field a bit.
Given that he hasn't shown much yet and is facing the Steelers this week, I wouldn't give Coles much consideration. And as much as I like Morgan, I don't think you can trust him quite yet given his lack of production through two games (3-38-0).
That leaves three for two spots. Of those, I'd pick Sims-Walker and Robinson as your other starters. Sims-Walker showed a lot last week, busting out for 6-106-1, and he has a nice matchup Sunday with Houston. I could see him having another solid outing. As for Robinson, he has been the Rams' leading receiver in each of their games, hauling in 11-141-1 on the season. The Packers' secondary is good, but St. Louis might need to throw a lot to stay in this contest, which bodes well for Robinson. I'd go with that pair, as I don't see Clayton doing a whole lot this week.
