Extra attention is being paid to the relationship between Panthers QB Jake Delhomme and WR Steve Smith following the release of a video that captured the two talking things over on the sideline in Week One. Smith was wearing a microphone for the station broadcasting the game and told Delhomme, who threw four interceptions in the season opener, that "I never really liked you as a quarterback, but as a person, I love you as a person." While some perceived the interaction as Smith's way of knocking Delhomme when he was already down, Smith has been adamant that he was only trying to comfort the struggling signalcaller. Sources familiar with Smith say he's not spinning his way through damage control. He's always spoken highly of Delhomme as a person, although it's clear from his body language on the field that the quarterback's play has left him frustrated at times. There seems to be no animosity between them, though.
