Lions OL coach George Yarno will be spending his Saturday nights for the time being trying to figure out who his starting left guard will be — Daniel Loper or Manny Ramirez? Yarno will take under consideration just about every factor: health of the two players, matchups for the next game, which player has performed best in practice that week, the whole package. Loper started the opener at New Orleans, when the Lions struggled to run the ball, and Ramirez filled in for a not-quite-healthy Loper (knee) against the Vikings. The Lions ran the ball fairly well in the game, especially considering that the Vikings finished the past three seasons ranked No. 1 against the run. If that trend continues, Ramirez could win the job at some point. He's considered the stronger of the two players, although he remains a raw product who needs refinement. Loper is more polished, and he has better height and wingspan, but he might be a tackle in guard's clothing.
