Commissioner Roger Goodell has appointed Stephen Jones, son of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and the team’s chief operating officer, to the NFL’s competition committee.
Jones replaces former Panthers executive Mark Richardson, who recently resigned from his post with the Panthers.
“This is both an honor and a great responsibility,” Stephen Jones said. “I look forward to having the opportunity to contribute.”
Jerry Jones twice served on the committee previously, and longtime GM Tex Schramm also served on the prestigious committee for years.
The competition committee is made up of team executives, head coaches and club ownership representatives. The committee annually reviews the rules and all competitive aspects of the game on the field. After studying possible modifications to the rules, the committee makes recommendations on changes to the entire ownership group at the NFL’s annual spring meeting.
The committee is currently co-chaired by Titans head coach Jeff Fisher and Falcons president Rich McKay. The other members, besides Stephen Jones, are Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, Giants president John Mara, Ravens vice president and general manager Ozzie Newsome, Colts president Bill Polian and Texans GM Rick Smith.
Jones, 45, has been with the Cowboys since Jerry Jones purchased the club in 1989.
