The following quotes are from NFL scouts, coaches and front-office personnel, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

• "(Broncos OLB Elvis) Dumervil was running by (Bears OLT) Orlando Pace (in the preseason) as Al Michaels was calling him 'the great' Orlando Pace. (Packers DRE Cullen) Jenkins is not fast and he was running by (Pace in Week One) — are you kidding me? Wait until he sees (Vikings DE) Jared Allen. I bet you he gets hurt."

• "How do you get beat on the same play in the same coverage to lose a game like Buffalo did against (Tom) Brady. It's Football 101 — don't let great quarterbacks go down the middle. That's on (Bills defensive coordinator) Perry Fewell. They call the defense 'Tampa 2', but what does the middle linebacker do in the cover-2 Tampa Bay used to run? The middle 'backer turns his back and runs 17-22 yards to his landmark and turns around. That is coaching. On those two TD passes, the (linebacker) is not looking at the quarterback. The premise in zone coverage is to see the ball. When do you play zone defense and never look at the quarterback?"

• "The most important underlying ability of a head coach is to be able to teach — to teach his players and to teach his assistants. (Bill) Belichick is phenomenal at teaching. ... (Jets head coach) Rex Ryan is goofy, but the reason players like him — he knows what he is talking about and he keeps it fun. He is not sending his players home with another three or four hours of homework like (Eric) Mangini was doing when the Jets were 8-2 — (Mangini) does not know how to keep it fun. Ryan gets his players going downhill and has them playing in the backfield all day. He puts them in situations to be successful."

• "As a player, all know what they do well. That is what (Bill) Belichick does so well — diagnosing strengths and putting players in positions to maximize them without exposing their shortcomings. Tully Banta-Cain is the perfect example. How many sacks did he have in the opener? He could not even get on the field in San Francisco. They were trying to make him an all-down, every-down linebacker. Belichick knew he was coming back. He turns him loose to speed-rush outside and asks him to bust his ass on special teams — run down the field and you are out. Stay fresh, then go in and rush outside. When was the last time a player left New England and played better elsewhere? On the flip side, why is it that when everyone leaves Oakland, they play better elsewhere? Randy Moss is phenomenal again."

• "Fullback is the most overrated position in the NFL. I don't want players that are on the field every three snaps. I want every-down players. They have a value — don't get me wrong — but I would never pay one any real money."

• "(Ravens FB) Le'Ron McClain can run, catch and block — he does it all. He is a young version of (former 49ers FB) William Floyd before he got hurt. (Floyd) was a beast before he blew out his knee."

• "(Broncos head coach) Josh (McDaniels) shipped out (Jay) Cutler. He had a certain type of criteria he was seeking, and you better have them all. The last one that matters is how you throw the ball. The first is how you affect all 52 guys on the team — how do you play, how do you present yourself, how do you work out? It's why Josh could not live with Cutler, and (Bill) Belichick probably didn't live with Drew (Bledsoe). Everyone forgets Josh was a quarterback in high school and college, and his dad was a high school coach. I think he knows something about quarterbacks."

• "(Packers OLT Chad) Clifton and (ORT Allen) Barbre are done. I don't know how (the Packers) survive with those two on the edges."
