Jets head coach Rex Ryan and 49ers head coach Mike Singletary have both confirmed that the league is investigating possible tampering by the Jets involving Niners unsigned first-round pick Michael Crabtree.
"My understanding is they filed charges with the league," Ryan told The Associated Press. "I'm saying my response is it's not true. I mean, it's not accurate. It's not true, but, hey, we'll let the league figure this out."
Singletary was reluctant to discuss the tampering charges, other than to say it's a situation "the league is going to handle internally."
As the only unsigned draft choice, WR Crabtree, the 10th overall selection in the April draft, and his agent, Eugene Parker, have rebuffed the 49ers' contract offer of approximately $20 million over five years, with a reported $16 million in guaranteed money. They are said to be seeking a contract more in line with a higher pick, where they felt Crabtree should have been selected.
The Jets are thought to be in the market for a wide receiver to bolster their current group.
The tampering charges were initially reported by the New York Daily News.
