As an undrafted free agent wide receiver out of Alcorn State, Nate Hughes beat the odds to make the Jaguars' roster this summer. However, when thrust into a key role in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 31-17 loss to the Cardinals because of an injury to No. 3 WR Troy Williamson, Hughes literally dropped the ball — and he paid for his mistakes Monday when he was cut by the Jaguars.

Jacksonville also cut TE Greg Estandia. The club filled their roster spots by signing rookie CB William Middleton off Atlanta’s practice squad and rookie free agent S Courtney Greene, who had been drafted by Seattle in April but was cut in early September.

Hughes failed to come up with consecutive catchable passes in the endzone that would have cut Arizona's lead to seven points with less than five minutes left. The first drop came on third down and the second drop came on a fourth-down pass from QB David Garrard that bounced off his facemask.

The drops halted a Jacksonville rally from a 31-3 deficit and effectively ended the game.

More bad news came when the Jaguars were forced to place WR Troy Williamson on injured reserve after he suffered a torn labrum in his right shoulder during the loss to Arizona. He had three catches for 34 yards in two games.

After starting WRs Torry Holt and Mike Sims-Walker, the Jaguars' WR corps is tremendously unsettled. Rookies Mike Thomas and Jarett Dillard are expected to be called upon to play bigger roles.
