For Jaguars fans in Jacksonville, showing up to the stadium will be their only method of seeing the home opener. The NFL has blacked out the team's game against the NFC champion Cardinals on Sunday because of low ticket sales, the third time in six years that the Jags will not be locally televised for their home opener.
The Jaguars have routinely struggled to drum up support in the city, and the national recession has only exacerbated the problem. Despite different packages and discounts aimed at making tickets more affordable, the organization has been met with tepid success and is facing the very real possibility of having many of its home games blacked out this season.
The Jags are coming off a highly disappointing 5-11 season in 2008 and lost a close game to the Colts in Indianapolis last week.
The Chargers and Lions are also facing blackout possibilities for Sunday but have been given extensions from the NFL in the hopes of selling the requisite number of tickets. The Jags didn't petition the league for an extension.
