CB Darrelle Revis
New York Jets
Height: 5-11¼, Weight: 198, Speed: 4.42
Notes: Departed University of Pittsburgh a year early and was drafted in the first round, 14th overall in 2007 by the Jets, who aggressively traded up, packaging their first-, second- and fifth-round picks in a swap with the Panthers to land Revis. Became the first Jets rookie to start at cornerback since Ray Mickens opened in 1996 and started all 16 games, recording 91 tackles, a team-leading 13 pass breakups and three interceptions. Earned Pro Bowl honors in '08, when he started all 16 games again, and notched 59-15-5 with one sack, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveri
Positives: Has great size with a strong, thick build; very long, 32 1⁄8-inch arms; and good press strength to reroute and outmuscle receivers at the line of scrimmage. Good route recognition — rides the back hips of receivers and maintains good positioning. Very good zone awareness, eyes and anticipation — reads the QB's drop and is quick to the break point on balls thrown in front of him. Has loose ankles and outstanding lateral agility — transitions cleanly out of his breaks. Solid run defender — understands leverage and contain responsibilities.
Negatives: Is a bit of a strider and does not appear sudden, which at times plays to his advantage in baiting quarterbacks. Downfield ball skills are suspect, as he has struggled some to match up with big receivers vertically and track the ball along the sideline when his back is to it — can be challenged to defend the deep fade in the red zone. Could show more consistent urgency defending the run and pursuing the ball. Submarine tackler — could do a better job wrapping up as a tackler and support more physically.
Summary: Quickly has emerged as one of the NFL's top pass defenders, starting every game of his career, earning Pro Bowl honors in his second season and locking down Texans Pro Bowl WR Andre Johnson in Week One. Has rare ability to bait average quarterbacks into throwing the ball his way, possessing great confidence and outstanding short-area burst to recover. Should benefit highly from an aggressive front that keeps quarterbacks on edge, limits time in coverage and restricts the need to cover down the field. A Pro Bowl talent.
