Coming off a season in which the Ravens led the NFL with 592 carries, and with three capable ballcarriers in tow, look for Baltimore to again feature an offensive attack heavy on rushing.
The focal point will be second-year RB Ray Rice, who has secured the starting job and will get the majority of the touches. The way we hear it, Rice, 22, will also be a major part of the passing game. Note that he caught eight passes for 67 yards - Derrick Mason-like numbers - in Baltimore's third preseason game. Rice, who snagged 33 passes as a rookie, is comfortable as a pass catcher, and dual-threat backs can thrive in Cam Cameron's offense. To wit: Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson averaged 67.8 catches in Cameron's five seasons as San Diego's offensive coordinator. Also, in 2007, Cameron's only season as the Dolphins' head coach, RB Ronnie Brown snagged 39 passes - a career-high - in just seven games before suffering a season-ending knee injury.
As a result, Rice, who rushed for 108 yards on 19 carries and caught two passes for 12 yards in Week One, figures to be a very busy man this season.
But where does this leave Willis McGahee, the Ravens' former starting tailback?
From what we're told, expect the 27-year-old McGahee to still get his fair share of work - perhaps double-digit carries per game. And indeed, he carried 10 times for 44 yards and a touchdown in Week One. He is bigger and stronger than Rice, and he could emerge as the Ravens' primary short-yardage and goal-line back at the expense of FB Le'Ron McClain, who we hear could get significantly fewer carries this season because he's the team's lone fullback. Last season, the Ravens also carried veteran blocking back Lorenzo Neal on the roster, freeing McClain (who carried six times for 19 yards and a TD in Week One) to become one of the more surprising breakout backs of recent memory, considering he wasn't even a featured back in college.
To McGahee's credit, he has handled his demotion well to this point, and the hope is that there is enough work to go around in the Baltimore backfield to keep everyone happy throughout the season. But there is no doubt that Rice is first in line for that work as the 2009 campaign starts.
