The Chargers cut 21 players Saturday, including projected starter Kynan Forney, and placed DE Ryon Bingham (arm) on injured reserve.
Forney, a ninth-year veteran, was given a new contract by San Diego this offseason and was slated to be the team's starting right guard. However, a neck injury plagued him over the past few weeks, causing him to be a casualty. Rookie Louis Vasquez likely will take over as the starting right guard.
Entering his fifth season, Bingham tore his triceps in mid-August, an injury that will cause him to miss the season. Although he wasn't set to start, his loss leaves the Bolts thin at defensive end.
Two other notable vets released Saturday were DT Ian Scott, who was deemed expendable when the Chargers recently acquired Travis Johnson from Houston, and OT L.J. Shelton, a backup who played in all 16 games last season and started two.
Also cut by San Diego to meet the 53-man roster limit were LB Eric Bakhtiari, WR Gary Banks, LB Darry Beckwith, CB Simeon Castille, OT Corey Clark, DE Andre Coleman, TE Charles Davis, OG Ray Feinga, DE Keith Grennan, LB James Holt, DT Rashaad Jackson, FB Billy Latsko, WR Charly Martin, C Ryan McDonald, RB Kestahn Moore, CB Antonio Smith, P Truman Spencer and TE Kory Sperry.
