The Bears’ undeniably suspect situation at wide receiver is a topic that figures to continue being frequently discussed in the coming weeks and months.
But another topic team insiders believe hasn’t nearly received its just due is a situation at tight end that couldn’t be more positive.
Certainly former first-round draft pick Greg Olsen — who instantly connected with new Bears QB Jay Cutler both on and off the field — is a player expected by most observers to be the team’s most productive pass-catching weapon.
“Cutler likes going to his tight ends,” one team insider said. “He developed a strong rapport with Tony Scheffler in Denver (Scheffler had the third-most receiving yards on the Broncos last season with 645, behind Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal, despite missing three games), and I believe Scheffler was Cutler’s best friend in Denver, just like Olsen has become in Chicago.
“Cutler has bent over backward to speak positively about every one of his receivers, but it’s become obvious Olsen is the guy he has the most faith in.
“I said at the start of the offseason that I thought he had a good chance to catch 80 balls this season with Cutler throwing to him (Olsen had 54 catches, the most among Bears receivers, last season), and I still feel that way.“
But the good vibration courtesy of the Bears' tight ends hardly stops with Olsen, with both 11-year veteran Desmond Clark and promising second-year pro Kellen Davis also having a great deal to offer.
Clark is easy to overlook — but he shouldn’t be.
“Cutler feels real safe throwing to him, too,” the insider said of Clark. “People have been writing him off for the last three years. You can’t help but wonder how long he can keep going at a position where more punishment is inflicted than at most positions, but he just keeps putting up very consistent numbers (45 catches in ’06, 44 catches in ’07 and 41 last season). Clark gets banged up a lot, but he’s been very durable and has managed to stay on the field for the Bears.”
As for Davis, it’s unlikely there are enough balls to go around for him to be considered a major receiving weapon this season.
“But he’s a young guy who has displayed some real flashes and contributes on special teams,” the insider said. “There’s no denying his potential.”
