When asked recently who will handle the Patriots' play-calling without an official offensive coordinator, Bill Belichick answered, "Well, ultimately, you can say that I am responsible for the plays." While it's rare for head coaches to be regular play-callers, it's almost unheard of for defensive-minded head coaches to do so for the offense, or vice versa. Yet, don't dismiss his assertion so quickly, as the head coach will, in fact, play a bigger role in the offensive game plan than in seasons past. Expect Belichick to consult heavily with new QB coach Bill O'Brien in calling the shots. Belichick has used a similar tactic in prior years. Apprenticeships are prevalent elsewhere in the organization, as well. The team hired former Titans GM Floyd Reese to help ready director of player personnel Nick Caserio in his debut campaign, and Caserio is doubling as a mentor to new WR coach Chad O'Shea.
