In his third season, coordinator Dirk Koetter might finally be able to unveil the high-octane passing attack that he built his reputation around during his college coaching stints at Arizona State and Boise State. It might seem odd for him to do so, considering how he’ll forge into 2009 with a WR corps sporting an almost entirely new look. Yet, the smaller and speedier brand of receiver comprising the newest unit is more conducive to the three- and four-receiver spreads Koetter wants to showcase than last season’s big-bodied and less sleek crew. The club has already penciled in 5-foot-8 rookie Mike Thomas for the slot job, believing he has dynamite open-field agility with receivers flanking him on both sides. With the offensive linemen likely needing some time to get reacquainted with one another, David Garrard won’t be retreating into deep drops too often but will instead be targeting more of the quick-hitting routes.
