The Redskins were awarded Kentucky DE Jeremy Jarmon in the third round of Thursday's NFL supplemental draft.

Jarmon, who entered the draft after testing positive for an NCAA banned substance and subsequently was suspended for what would have been his senior season, received high marks for his character despite the mistake. He has ideal size and strength for a base end in a 4-3 defense.

“As a player, we liked his production,” said Scott Campbell, the Redskins' director of player personnel. “He’s good against the run and can rush the passer. He’s young, only 21 years old, with a lot of playing experience. After meeting him and spending time with him, it is easy to see he is a quality person with good upside and all the qualities we look for. Everyone at the school spoke very highly of him — from the coaches to the training staff to the strength staff, they all had positive things to say.”

The Redskins' pass rush has been a weakness in recent years and has been a major priority this offseason, with the Redskins landing the biggest fish in free agency, Pro Bowl DT Albert Haynesworth, and selecting Texas DE-OLB Brian Orakpo with their first pick of the draft.

Last offseason, the Redskins traded their 2009 second-round pick for Jason Taylor during training camp after Phillip Daniels went down with injury. Jarmon could compete for playing time with two aging veterans, Daniels and Renaldo Wynn, and provide much-needed youth in rotation while being groomed as a replacement.

“First and foremost, he’s a quality person who has already graduated,” said Vinny Cerrato, the Redskins' executive vice president of football operations. “We watched him a lot on film and went to his workout last week. He has the size, strength and athleticism that we like at the position and he’ll have the opportunity to learn from veterans like Phillip Daniels and Renaldo Wynn.”

The draft officially concluded with no other players getting selected.
