If an award were given for the Most Valuable 49er in the team’s minicamps and OTAs, we hear voters would have been hard-pressed not to select third-year defender Dashon Goldson, who was named the new starting free safety by head coach Mike Singletary shortly after the end of the 2008 season. The hope is that Goldson will be more of a playmaker than three-year incumbent Mark Roman, who hasn’t intercepted a pass or forced a fumble since ’06. If Goldson’s efforts so far this offseason are any indication, the Niners’ pass defense figures to be a lot more disruptive in ’09. “It seemed like he made an interception almost every day,” one source said of Goldson. “He’s shown great playmaking instincts and is a hard hitter. The big question is whether he can stay healthy, since he’s not a real durable guy.” We also hear veteran newcomer Dré Bly might have come on strong enough late in OTAs to edge ahead of Tarell Brown in the battle for the starting job at right corner.
