When Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, son of legendary defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan, noted that Cleveland would employ the “46” defense in some form this season, it underscored the variety of looks the Browns want to show in 2009. “We want to be multiple, and we want to have multiple players who can play different spots and cause confusion,” Rob Ryan said in June. The Browns will continue to use the 3-4 as their base defense, but new wrinkles are certain in Ryan’s scheme. The Browns’ defensive personnel affords Ryan some options; he has good depth to work with at defensive end and defensive tackle, and he has linemen who have played in 3-4 and 4-3 schemes. Also, the Browns improved their depth at linebacker in free agency and the draft. No matter what the scheme, the Browns will need to improve upon the 17 sacks they posted last season.
