It’s quite clear that Kurt Warner is more entrenched than ever as the Cardinals’ starting quarterback. Armed with a lucrative new two-year deal, Warner’s already considerable influence has increased, as he figures to be more of a coach on the field with former offensive coordinator Todd Haley leaving to become the Chiefs’ new head coach. At the same time, though, we hear QB Matt Leinart is quietly drawing rave reviews for the way he has accepted his backup role, displaying impressive maturity, especially when compared to the offseason behavior patterns of fellow 2006 first-round QBs Vince Young and Jay Cutler. “He has worked hard on his fundamentals with (QB coach) Chris Miller, and he handled Warner’s contract situation surprisingly well,” said one team insider who previously predicted that Leinart might ask for a trade. “He has shown steady progress with both his throwing and conditioning, and it’s obvious he wants to be a good player.”

Sorry, Dan, but I'm just not buying it yet. As a longtime Cardinal fan who has seen all of their games, I can say that Leinart was not mature last season. He openly pouted on the bench and disengaged from his teammates and coaches. The Cardinals' 3rd string quarterback, Brian St. Pierre, was much more involved on the sidelines with the coaches than Leinart. I swear he looked like he was going to nod off in the 2nd AZ/STL game (I was sitting right behind the Cardinal bench at that game.) Leinart didn't even seem interested in the games until the playoffs started, and then he started mugging for the cameras. In Tampa during the Super Bowl week, Leinart told a reporter that he could have led the Cardinals to the Super Bowl; but all that came to my mind was his most recent season as a starter (2007) in which he posted a league-low passer rating of 61.9, averaged only 129 yards and 0.4 touchdowns per game, and didn't throw a single touchdown to Fitzgerald through 5 games. Yeah, I saw his mixed martial arts training publicity stunt this offseason, but it struck me as more of a publicity stunt than anything else. It would cost the Cards a cap hit if they were to cut him this summer; but frankly, I'd be surprised if he's even in the NFL in 2010. He looks like a bust to me.

Sorry,Dan, I'm not buying the Lienart is now mature story line. Lienart has been a huge disapointment both on and off the field. It is an injustice to both Cutler and Young to mention them in the same sentence with Lienart. Cutler has Hall of Fame type talent and close to a .500 record. Young has been productive and has an above .500 recored when on the field. Lienart is an marginal NFL QB talent with a very questionable work ethic and will be challeged by St.Pierre in training camp. The politics of football and his contract will keep him as the back-up to Warner in 09. Rod Graves made a huge mistake drafting this guy. He has bust written all over him.
