In an extremely close vote, readers of ProFootballWeekly.com have voiced their opinion that Shaun Hill, not Alex Smith, will be under center for the 49ers when their season opens Sept. 13 at Arizona.

In our first poll on our redesigned Web site, we asked readers whom coach Mike Singletary would name the starting quarterback between Hill and Smith. The results were tight, with 441 of 834 respondents voting for Hill. That is a 53 percent vote in favor of Hill.

The question was prompted by Dan Arkush’s June 18 "Way We Hear It" item entitled “Smith narrows gap in 49ers’ QB battle.”

Our new question, which can be found in the bottom right-hand corner of the Web site, asks: “Which newcomer will have the biggest impact in Chicago?”

We thank those of you who participated in the last survey and encourage everybody to provide their two cents on the current question.
