Rex Ryan, never one to abstain from experimentation, has seen positive results from one such offseason trial: Kareem Brown at tight end. The third-year pro out of Miami (Fla.) failed to make a dent at his presumed position of defensive end with both the Patriots and Jets since being drafted in 2007, and was only a lukewarm bet to keep a roster spot in ’09. But with the Jets desperate for help at tight end, Ryan decided to give it whirl with Brown on the other side of the line of scrimmage. The results — albeit preliminary — have been inspiring. He reportedly has shed some 25 pounds off his 295-pound frame, and has been fluid in his movements. While he primarily will be counted on to provide run-blocking help on either side of the offensive line, he has earned praise for a pair of surprisingly soft hands. Heading into camp, he stands as the prohibitive favorite to earn the No. 3 TE job behind Dustin Keller and Bubba Franks.
