• Sources say Al Davis is willing to cut maligned Raiders S Michael Huff if he doesn’t show improvement in the near future. Huff, the team’s 2006 first-round pick (seventh overall), has been working at strong safety during OTAs and minicamps, and we hear he’s likely to be released if he doesn’t earn a starting spot. The 26-year-old has been a major disappointment and was demoted from the starting lineup to the bench midway through last season. He has yet to show signs of figuring things out this offseason.
• Word out of Oakland is Raiders fourth-round pick WR Louis Murphy impressed observers with his work ethic during the team’s OTAs and minicamps. Murphy stood out in a receiving corps in major need of a playmaker, while first-round choice WR Darrius Heyward-Bey spent much of his time on the sideline nursing a hamstring injury.
• Knowing his roster spot could be in jeopardy after the Chargers brought in numerous young cornerbacks over the past few years, CB Cletis Gordon has made it a point to spend extra time at the team’s facilities this offseason. An undrafted free agent about to enter his fourth year, Gordon has been one of the few veterans practicing with younger players lately to sharpen his skills in advance of training camp. Even though his experience might give him an edge over newer teammates, he is doing everything he can to stay off the roster bubble prior to Week One.
• Although it’s rarely a good idea to extrapolate what will happen during the season based on developments in OTAs and minicamps, it’s fair to say that Bills second-round pick Jairus Byrd has an uphill battle to claim the starting FS job because of his late arrival to the sessions. The Oregon product was barred from the workouts per NFL rules that limit rookies’ involvement until their college year is completed. But what particularly hampers Byrd’s chances — at least early in the season — is that he’s transitioning to safety after playing cornerback for the Ducks. Furthermore, with a stacked CB corps, most of whom are well-versed in the defense, there’s little chance of Bryd contending for the nickel job.
• How long will Pat White’s trial at quarterback last? That’s the question in Miami, where White’s poor accuracy couldn’t have strayed further from the strong showings he gave in workouts leading up to the draft. Yet, the Dolphins are in no rush to plant him full time at receiver, the position most analysts and coaches believed would be his best NFL position during the scouting process. At least some of that is due to a Dolphins receiving corps that has been beefed up during the offseason. A position change could be coming, yet don’t expect it to be any time soon.
• The way we hear it, three Browns defenders were especially impressive in offseason workouts: ILB D’Qwell Jackson and CBs Brandon McDonald and Eric Wright. Jackson is established, one of the better players at his position in the NFL, but McDonald and Wright are coming off 2008 seasons in which they struggled at times, so their progress has to be regarded as a positive.
• A source close to the Steelers sees some similarities between rookie CB Keenan Lewis and veteran Ike Taylor, both tall, rangy defensive backs. Lewis has better hands than Taylor, who is as well-known for dropping interceptions as catching them, but Taylor has better speed.
• We hear that diminutive and speedy Steelers RB Stefan Logan, who played for the CFL’s B.C. Lions last season, likely faces an uphill battle to make the squad as a kick returner unless rookies Joe Burnett and Mike Wallace falter.
• Don’t even try to guess who will be starting at defensive tackle for the Colts. It’s far and away the most fluid position on the team after Indy drafted Fili Moala and Terrance Taylor, re-signed talented but troubled Ed Johnson and appointed Indianapolis outsider Larry Coyer as defensive coordinator. The inside-outside versatility of Raheem Brock and Keyunta Dawson further muddies the outlook, albeit in a positive way. Then again, it doesn’t much matter who the starters are because having a more thorough DT rotation is among the points of emphasis this year after the club lacked consistency stopping the run last season.
