Some talented football players slid down draft boards because of medical issues, including TCU LB Jason Phillips, who is coming off a knee injury. If he were healthy, he would have warranted looks a round or two earlier and could turn out to be a better player than where he was drafted (No. 137 by the Ravens). Florida TE Cornelius Ingram, who missed his senior season because of a knee injury, may need to have another surgery to heal fully and teams were apprehensive about rolling the dice too early on a player who could miss his rookie season. The Eagles, who drafted Wisconsin CB Jack Igwekuonu in a similar spot a year ago, could reap some great value when Ingram is fully recovered.

Missouri's Colin Brown was not high on the radar of many teams, but Chiefs GM Scott Pioli has a track record of going against the grain and uncovering some gems in the late rounds, such as Tom Brady and Matt Cassel. Time will tell if Pioli found another one. As a fifth-round selection, Brown cannot be expected to be more than a developmental backup. Pioli's former understudy Thomas Dimitroff also took a shot on a small-school talent in Furman CB William Middleton, who worked out very well at his pro day, when he clocked in the low 4.4s. He lacks great size, but he is athletic and has the ability to compete for a roster spot.

The Bears added their second receiver of the draft, after nabbing Juaquin Iglesias in the third round, by selecting Abilene Christian's Johnny Knox, who really opened eyes at the Combine when he blazed times in the low 4.3s. As long as he stays focused and can absorb the offense, he could contribute in the slot, improving the Bears' speed at the position.

Two very productive college receivers, South Carolina's Kenny McKinley and Rice's Jarett Dillard, should get a chance to make the rosters of the Broncos and Jaguars, respectively. McKinley has a very slight frame and needs to prove he can stay healthy. Dillard enters a great situation at a big position of need for Jacksonville and will able to learn from the newly acquired Torry Holt.

The Bengals have a strong track record of identifying kicking talent and may have landed the next great one in Cincinnati P Kevin Huber, who places the ball very well and should help control field position. Having coached the local product at the Senior Bowl, the Bengals were very familiar with Huber.

Some solid value was still left to be found at the CB position, with Cincinnati's DeAngelo Smith going to Dallas, Virginia Tech's Macho Harris going to Philadelphia and Central Florida's Joe Burnett going to Pittsburgh. Each has return ability and the potential to develop into No. 3 cornerbacks.

The Packers found good value in the fifth round in LSU FB Quinn Johnson and South Carolina OG Jamon Meredith. Johnson is a hammer who should help clear holes for Ryan Grant and upgrade the FB position. Meredith slid in this draft because of his questionable toughness and passion for the game. If the light ever comes on, and lasting until the fifth round could be the best thing that happened to him, he could start in the NFL. He fits the Packers' zone-running game very well.

The Texans found great value in the fourth round three years ago when they nabbed TE Owen Daniels, and may have found another gem in Rice TE James Casey in the fifth round this year. Although Casey is limited as a blocker, he has very good hands and ball skills and could contribute readily in the passing game.

Oklahoma S Nic Harris was a very productive player in college, but lacks the stopwatch speed desired for the pro game. He could be moved to linebacker in the Bills' fast-flowing scheme if he can toughen up and play more physical. Evaluators were disappointed when he pulled out of the Senior Bowl, where he was scheduled to play linebacker, because of what was believed to be a phantom injury.

Ohio State OLB Marcus Freeman's history of knee injuries forced him to slide to the fifth round, where the Bears were happy to welcome him. GM Jerry Angelo has a track record of finding solid defensive talent in the middle rounds and could have another in the speedy Buckeyes ’backer if he can stay healthy, which he struggled to do as a senior despite playing every game. Pittsburgh MLB Scott McKillop also could be a very good value pick for the 49ers, where he likely could have an impact on special teams in his first year and eventually bring value on first and second downs. Evaluators have compared him to Zach Thomas.

Two more quarterbacks came off the board in the fifth round, with Sam Houston State's Rhett Bomar going to the Giants and Ball State's Nate Davis being picked up by the 49ers. Both lack the mental makeup desired in a starter, but they are competitive and could stick as No. 3 quarterbacks.

The Rams could turn out to have a nice find in the fifth round with the selection of North Carolina WR Brooks Foster, who was overshadowed in a talented group of receivers in college but has all the physical ability to develop into a solid contributor in the pros.

With such a big need for quality backup offensive linemen, they continue to come off the board fast, with the Buccaneers taking developmental OLT Xavier Fulton of Illinois, the Falcons grabbing North Carolina ORT Garrett Reynolds, the Eagles drafting Oregon OT Fenuki Tupou, the Panthers selecting Oklahoma OG Duke Robinson, the Cardinals taking LSU OG Herman Johnson as a tackle and the Patriots using their compensatory pick on Louisville OT George Bussey. Fulton, Reynolds and Tupou are all underpowered and need significant weight room work and physical development. Robinson's work ethic and character concerns pushed him down draft boards but he's a big, physical mauler who fits perfectly in Carolina's offense and could provide solid backup depth. Johnson does not have the feet to handle the edge easily, but he has vines for arm and rare length. Bussey worked out well at his pro day and caught some interest late in the process.

The round wrapped up with a nice bang, with the Titans finding value in Michigan State RB Javon Ringer. He slipped because of his injury history and lack of great measurables, but he is a very good football player who could exceed the expectations of where he was drafted.
