Crabtree has big adjustment to make in NFL

Posted April 06, 2009 @ midnight

The following quotes are from NFL scouts, coaches and front-office personnel, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

"If (WR) Michael Crabtree was available to us late in the first round, I'd pass on him. I'm not saying that he won't be good, but I'm not sold on his work ethic, and coming from the offense he did, he's going to have to work at it to make the adjustment."

"What were the Lions thinking, taking a back-loaded contract on a player (OLB Julian Peterson) who will quit if things are not right, with no agreement to restructure the contract beforehand? On paper, they get the better player. I'm not a fan of (DT Cory) Redding. But (the Lions also) gave up a fifth-round pick and inherited that back-loaded contract. How do you justify that?"

"(Ravens GM) Ozzie Newsome carried James Harris when he was in Baltimore. (Harris) went to Jacksonville, and look at the cast of characters he brought in there. Now he goes to Detroit. How many chances do you get to (screw) up billion-dollar franchises? Forget about AIG. The government should be looking at us. There are more frauds in the NFL than there are in Citigroup."

"(Browns GM George) Kokinis is clueless. He had little to no negotiating experience before he took the job, and he is not decisive at all. He is running the organization like he read how to be a GM out of a book. Who offers all of their players to be traded! With this group running the show the way they are now, they will not make it as long as the last group did. It's a joke."

"How many high picks of (Bears GM) Jerry Angelo's are not only off the team but out of the league altogether? When is there going to be some accountability in this league?"

"(University of Tennessee head coach) Lane Kiffin landed the No. 1 recruit in the country. He is going to last. He has got the entire state of Tennessee jacked up and the entire nation thinking he is a buffoon. He's definitely hurt himself nationally, but they love him locally."

"(NFLPA executive director) DeMaurice Smith is sharp. At the end of the day, having an ex-player did not matter at all. Players can tell them how they feel about issues. What the union needed was a strong negotiator, and they got one. This guy is impressive."

"Signing Terrell Owens will be a mistake (for Buffalo). (The general public) does not know half of what went on behind the scenes in Dallas. For Jerry Jones to kick you out of the building, it's got to be bad. (Owens) will be lucky to make it through a season."

"(Jets head coach) Rex Ryan is very confident in his scheme and what he can do on defense. I think they will be a lot better defensively. But they still don't have a quarterback who can manage a game. I can't see them passing one up in the draft."

"The Dolphins lost (CB Andre) Goodman (in free agency) and did not sign anyone to replace him. They need a nickel cornerback. ... When you look back at (former Dolphins GM) Randy Mueller's one draft (in charge) there, how many of those guys are still on the team? (WR) Ted Ginn is. John Beck is the No. 3 quarterback. There is nothing else left. They just traded (C Samson) Satele and basically just told him he couldn't play. (RB Lorenzo) Booker was gone after one year. I think they cut every other pick. They traded away their two best receivers - Wes Welker and Chris Chambers. And now that Randy is in San Diego, all of a sudden, things aren't going well there (either)."
