In need of help in the secondary, the Bears signed S Glenn Earl to a one-year contract on Saturday.
Earl, a fourth-round pick of the Texans in 2004, had been out of the NFL the past two seasons after suffering a torn Lisfranc ligament in his foot in the '07 preseason. Proving he was healthy during Chicago's recent minicamp, he was added to provide help in nickel packages and on special teams.
Earl, 27, was an effective player during his three seasons in Houston, playing in 37 games and starting 31. He had 153 tackles with three interceptions and six passes defended.
The Colts bolstered their linebacking corps late Friday by signing free-agent LB Adam Seward to a one-year contract.
Seward, 26, spent his first four years in the league with the Panthers. He played in 40 games and racked up 45 tackles for Carolina, also contributing on special teams.
In Indianapolis, Seward will provide depth on a defense that's thin at the linebacker position.
The Rams solidified their offensive line Friday with the re-signing of valuable utility man Adam Goldberg to a two-year deal, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Terms of the contract were not immediately available.
Acquired from the Vikings for a seventh-round draft pick before the 2006 season, Goldberg has made 10 starts in his career with the Rams. Last season Goldberg was the only offensive lineman in the NFL to start at four different positions - twice at left guard, twice at left tackle, once at right tackle and once at right guard.
