Three days after officially saying goodbye to Orlando Pace, the Rams cut the cord with another longtime star player Friday afternoon when they announced the release of WR Torry Holt. As was the case with Pace, Holt's release was not a surprise. The 32-year-old seven-time Pro Bowler was on the books for $8 million in cap money, and he was expected to follow in Pace's footsteps before next Tuesday, when Holt was due a $1.25 million roster bonus.
"The Rams will forever be grateful for the way Torry Holt represented the Rams on the field and in the community," Rams owner/chairman Chip Rosenbloom said in a team release. "He is an All-Pro in every sense of the word. Over the past 10 seasons Torry has proven himself to be one of the finest wide receivers in league history. This is a difficult decision because Torry has meant so much to the organization."
The Ravens will soon release CB Samari Rolle, multiple media outlets reported Friday.
Rolle started 10 regular-season games for the Ravens in 2008, notching 23 tackles and intercepting three passes. Rolle, who will be 33 in August, has 31 career interceptions, but he has missed significant time the last two seasons. He sat out six regular-season and one playoff game with injuries in '08 and missed 10 games in '07 because of injuries and an illness.
Rolle is entering his 12th NFL season.
The Chiefs agreed to terms with LB Corey Mays, providing another body to a position the club is needy at. A three-year veteran, Mays played for the Patriots from 2006-07, when Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli was in charge of personnel in New England. He also saw time with the Bengals from 2007-08.
The Chiefs had released stalwart LB Donnie Edwards earlier this offseason.
